Salann is a platform for Christian thinking on culture, politics and more. The site was founded in 2020 to inform, build up, challenge and inspire Christians in Scotland and beyond. Salann is the Gaelic word for salt. The name is a reflection of the site’s Celtic focus but it also carries a deeper meaning:
Distinctiveness: Salt has specific connotations in the Bible. Jesus referred to his followers as the “salt of the earth” (Matthew 5:13). They are to be distinctive, flavouring the society around them. If Christians lose their distinctiveness, they are good for nothing. Jesus said, “if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot”.
Faithfulness: Being distinctive means faithfully upholding the truths of scripture – even in a culture which reacts as if Christianity is an alien language, and even when there is opposition. In the West, we’ve had it easy. Our Judaeo Christian history has ensured a high degree of religious literacy and sympathy towards Christians. In many ways, this is changing. We cannot be silent in the face of opposition.
Grace: In Colossians 4:6, the Apostle Paul implores Christians: “Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone.” Christians must be able to give an answer to all people with grace, whatever the conversation. When proclaiming the truth, we must be wise as serpents and innocent as doves.
An influence for good: Salt is enhancing, preserving and healing. It has many beneficial properties. In sharing the Gospel and speaking the truth, Christians have a beneficial influence on the world around them. A small amount of salt flavours a big pot of food. And a small number of faithful Christians make waves in a culture.
